Sedation

WHAT IS Sedation

Sedation can be provided for those patients who are anxious about undergoing dental treatment. Sedation is extremely safe, providing gentle relaxation and reduced anxiety, whilst still allowing patients to communicate with the clinician. All treatment to be completed while under sedation will be confirmed at a consultation appointment beforehand

An effective form of treatment for a nervous patient is via intravenous (IV) sedation. The drugs have a relaxing and calming effect, allowing the clinicians to carry out treatment easily.

Our ARC clinicians are highly trained to carry out sedation procedures, and will assess each patient prior to treatment. Weight, age and medical conditions are all taken into consideration before suitability of this type of sedation is agreed upon. All of this will be discussed in a consultation with one of our ARC clinicians.

IV sedation will make the patient drowsy and unaware of the treatment that is being undertaken, but the patient will still remain lucid enough to communicate and cooperate with the dental team.

The effects of the sedative will take time to wear off, and it is important that a chaperone attends the appointment with the patient to help take them home and be with them during the recovery period, as they will not be able to drive or work machinery. Our trained ARC clinicians will discuss post-operative care in length prior to the appointment.
